When you're moving goods across cities, one of the first decisions is whether to book a Full Truck Load (FTL) or a Part Truck Load (PTL). Getting this right affects both cost and delivery time.
Full Truck Load (FTL)
FTL means your shipment takes up an entire vehicle, whether or not it physically fills the space. This is usually the better choice when:
- Your consignment is large enough to fill most of a truck
- You need a direct, faster delivery with no stops for other shipments
- The goods are fragile, high-value, or need minimal handling
Part Truck Load (PTL)
PTL means your goods share a truck with other consignments, and you pay only for the space you use. This works well when:
- You have a smaller shipment that doesn't need a full vehicle
- You want to reduce transport cost per unit
- Your delivery timeline is flexible
Quick way to decide
As a rule of thumb, if your shipment would fill less than half a standard truck, PTL is usually more cost-effective. For anything larger, time-sensitive, or requiring careful handling, FTL is the safer bet. When booking through a transport directory, you can filter suppliers by exactly this — look for the 'Full Truck Load' or 'Part Truck Load' tags on each listing.
